“Vap, it has been a while since our last fun drive kan?”
Yup, if I remember correctly, our last fun drive was to Kalumpang situated 15 minutes drive from Tanjung Malim Town. A memorable event it was. However, the Fun Drive to Kuala Selangor is an event of its own.
“Kampung Kuantan is well known, both locally and internationally, for its unique heritage of the twinkling fireflies on mangrove tree species, called berembang. The “Berembang Tree” or known by its scientific name ‘Sonneratia Caselaris’ is a type of mangrove tree that grows wildly along the banks of Sungai Selangor. It needs a damp and swampy environment to live. “Berembang Tree” is important to the existence of these fireflies as it provides food for these insects. The fireflies will suck the juice from the leaves as food.”
On 26th April 2008, at 4.30 p.m. at the RV point R&R Jejantas Sungai Buloh Arah Utara the fun drive participant has gathered. A total of 22 cars consisting of WPC members and non-members has turned up for the event bringing together their family members.
Before departure the marshal conducted a briefing to the fun drive’s participant covering on the safety, routes and itenaries of the event. Numbering stickers were also distributed to the members. This is to ensure that the convoys will be in orders.
We departed from the RV point around 5.45 pm. There are some difficulties faced during the fun drive especially in the Sungai Buloh Town. The convoys stopped several times to regroup and rearranged. This has caused delay to the fun drive.
The convoy arrived at the first destination Pantai Jeram around 7.30 pm. Even though there we a bit delay in the timing, we still managed to catch the beautiful sunset scenery at Pantai Jeram, Kuala Selangor. See for yourself. The members took this opportunity to cherish the beutiful moment with their loves one.
It is makan time. After the Maghrib prayers, the food was already served on the table. Menu for that night were as follows:
White Rice
Ikan Kerapu Masak Tiga Rasa (Deep fried garoupa served with 3 flavours sauce)
Udang Goreng Mentega (Butter prawn)
Ketam Goreng Cili (Chilli Crab)
Sotong Goreng Tepung (Fried squid)
Kangkung Belacan
Sup cendawan (mushroom soup)
Fruits
Fresh Orange
Food is tasty and delicious. However, there are rooms for improvement especially on the drinks. We should have ordered water melon juice to complement the fresh orange.
After dinner, the convoy proceeds to the next destination Kampung Kuantan Fireflies Sanctuary. We arrived at the venue around 9.30pm. We were divided into group of four people for each ‘sampan’. We were informed that there are more than 20 sampans that are available that night. Life jacket is also a necessary for the sight seeing trip.
The sightseeing was simply breathtaking. The trip taking around 20 minutes. The unpolluted river has been a sanctuary for the fireflies. As informed with the sampan peddlers, there is only 3 countries in the world which have this species of fireflies and one of it is Malaysia. Proud to be Malaysian. We are surprised to see how the thousand of fireflies manage to be synchronized with each other.
Before dispersed, we gathered for group photo.
We would like to thank the organiser, marshal and participant for the memorable event. More photo can be found in the WPC Forum.
