Article on Amateur Radio in WPC forum.

Amateur Radio: What it’s all about?

Folks,

Some of you guys may have seen some of our members’ cars with the “fishing boat” antenna. Some of you must be wondering what the **** is that remote control car lookalike antenna?

It’s called amateur radio, or Ham Radio (Both of them mean the same thing).

Question 1: What is Amateur Radio?

Answer:

Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission, the Malaysian governing body for Amateur Radio, defines it as “Amateur Radio is defined as a radiocommunications services in which a station is used for self training, intercommunication and technical investigations carried out by authorized persons who are interested in radio technique solely with a personal aim and without any pecuniary interest.

In simple terms, it’s defined as a form of communication tool and service, just like using handphone, etc.

Question 2: What Can I do with Amateur Radio?

1. Communicate with your friends, in Malaysia and also around the world.
2. Communicate with your friends anywhere in town (by accessing the repeaters)
3. Provide instant communication to help out during Emergency times
4. Build your own antennas, power supplies, receivers, etc.

Question 3: I’m interested to know more. How should I start?

You can first download this Guideline for Amateur Radio, prepared by MCMC at the following website:

Guideline For Amateur Radio

Read thru this guideline to get grasp a better understanding about Amateur Radio.

In addition, you can also get more information on Malaysia’s Amateur Radio at the following websites:

a) Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitter Society (MARTS)

b) Malaysian Amateur Radio Emergency Services (MARES)

c) The Malays Radio Amateur Society of Northern Peninsular Malaysia

d) Equipments for Amateur Radio

Easiest way: Just post your questions on this thread, and we’ll try to help you out!!!

Question 4: Ok….Now I’ve read all the stuff….What do I do next?

You are recommended to sit for the Radio Amateur Examination (RAE) conducted by MCMC.

The exams will be held twice a year (April and September).

To know when are the exam’s held, please refere to this link:

http://www.mcmc.gov.my/ViewWhatIsNew.asp?cc=5545772&winrid=37246342

Question 5: What is RAE and how much does it cost?

The RAE is a written examination on the following topics:

A) The fundamental theory of electronics, electricity and radiocommunications;
B) The theory and operations of any amateur radio equipment
C) Regulations for operating an amateur radio equipment

RAE consist of 100 questions, multiple choice (Can tembak or dadu if you don’t know the answer…..ekekekkeke). Candidates are given 3 hours to answer all the questions. No marks are deducted for wrong answers.

Announcements on the RAE will be announced in the newspapers and MCMC website (http://www.mcmc.gov.my). No worries, if I hear that RAE will be held soon, I will definitely inform you guys.

RAE costs only RM50-00.

Question 6: Is Amateur Radio an expensive hobby

No, it’s not…….The cost of the equipment is roughly the same as a mobile phone. When you use amateur radio, you only pay an annual fee of RM24-00 per year and a one-time processing fee of RM60-00.

Some of us saved our money to sit for the RAE first. Once we have passed RAE, we would have accumulated enough money to purchase the necessary equipment.

Do not worry, as long as you have the interest, you can indulge yourself in this hobby. Even non-technical people can take up this hobby.

Thank you.
